How do I set up Windows 8 Mail for TalkTalk email?

This page tells you how to set up Windows 8 Mail to work with your TalkTalk email service. Before starting, make sure you know the exact spelling of your email address. If you're unsure, you can check your email address details by signing in to My Account.

These instructions are for computers running the Microsoft Windows 8 operating system only.

Please be aware that in order to sign in to Windows 8 Mail, you also need a Microsoft-provided email account. If you don't have one (and don't want to create one) please consider using a different program for your email.

Follow the steps below to set up Windows 8 Mail to work with your TalkTalk email service.

Step 1 - Start up the software

  1. On the Start screen, click the Mail icon.

  1. On the sign-in screen, enter your Microsoft (not TalkTalk) email address and password.

Step 2 - Add a new email account

  1. On the Mail screen, move the mouse pointer to the top right corner and select Settings from the Charms menu.

  1. On the Setttings menu, select Accounts and then Add an account.

  1. On the Add an account screen, select Other Account.

Step 3 - Enter your account details

  1. On the Add your Other account screen, type in your TalkTalk email address (as it appears in My Account, taking note of the exact spelling).
  2. Type your password into the Password box, remembering that it is case-sensitive, if you don't remember your password you can check and manage your email addresses in My Account.
  3. Click Show more details.

  1. Type into the Incoming (IMAP) email server box.
  2. Type port number 143 into the adjacent Port box.
  3. Type into the Outgoing (SMTP) email server box.
  4. Type port number 587 into the adjacent Port box.
  5. Tick the Outgoing server requires authentication box.
  6. Tick the Use the same password to send and receive mail box.


Once you've entered these details, click Connect. You'll then return to the main Mail window.

Your email account is now set up. To test it, send an email to your TalkTalk email address and check if Windows 8 Mail receives it.

The program will automatically check for new messages at regular intervals. You can make it immediately check for new messages by clicking the Sync button.
