MD5 email authentication

We no longer support Legacy MD5 authentication. However, we do have strong measures in place such as SSL/TLS. We're aware some of our customers have MD5 password encryption set in place - to make sure your email service remains updated, can you please check your settings using the tips below? We have provided the settings you'll need in email settings.

Remember that you can always access your messages using webmail.

If you use the “Mail” application on iOS (iPhone/iPad) and have issues retrieving your emails, you need to check that you’re not using an MD5 password encryption in your settings. The MD5 password encryption has been superseded and we no longer support it.

To make sure you’re not using MD5, follow these steps:

  1. Open your Settings app
  2. Select Accounts & Passwords
  3. Select your TalkTalk Mail account in the list of accounts
  4. Select your TalkTalk email address
  5. Select Advanced
  6. Select Authentication
  7. Make sure Password is selected (do not use “MD5 Challenge-Response”, “NTLM” or “HTTP MD5 Digest”)

If you switch from “MD5” to “Password”, please make sure you use SSL and Server Port 993 for IMAP (or 995 for POP) to maintain the maximum level of security

  8. Select Advanced in the top left corner of the screen
  9. Select Account in the top left corner of the screen
  10. Select Done in the top right corner of the screen

If you use the  Outlook application and have issues retrieving your emails, you need to check that you’re not using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) in your settings. SPA has been superseded and we no longer support it.

To make sure you’re not using SPA, follow these steps:

  1. In Outlook, access your account settings by going into the File menu and selecting Account Settings
  2. Select your TalkTalk Mail account and click on Change
  3. Make sure that Require logon using Secure Password Authentication(SPA) checkbox is not ticked
  4. Click Next and Finish

If you deactivate “Secure Password Authentication”, please make sure you use SSL/TLS to encrypt your connection and port number 993 for IMAP (or 995 for POP) to maintain the maximum level of security (you can find those settings in More Settings => Advanced).

If you use the “Thunderbird” application and have issues retrieving your emails, you need to check that you’re not using an “Encrypted password” in your settings. Using “Encrypted password” has been superseded and we no longer support it.

To make sure you’re not using “Encrypted password”, follow these steps:

  1. In Thunderbird, go to your TalkTalk Mail account and click on Views settings for this account
  2. Select Server Settings, in the list on the left
  3. Make sure Normal password is selected as the Authentication method.

If you switch from “Encrypted password” to “Normal password”, please make sure you use SSL/TLS as the “Connection security” (together with Port 993 for IMAP or Port 995 for POP) to maintain the maximum level of security
